GHC334,582 LOST IN 22 MOMO ROBBERIES WITHIN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 12TH THIS YEAR

Mobile Money since its inception in 2009, has grown to become the most preferred means of financial transactions in Ghana. Hardly will people opt for bank because of how easy,smart and quick it is for one to access Mobile Money Service. The Bank of Ghana in it’s report, has revealed that Mobile Money transactions have outwitted bank cheques in the second quarter of 2021″MoMo outstrips cheque transactions by ¢374.8bn as cheques get relegated” .Mobile Money is currently used for various activities which in turn also affect the positive growth of the economy. In as much as this has gained ground, the sector keeps on struggling with a number of challenges such as robberies,acid baths, etc on Agents and consumers.

This happens to be one of the challenges of government’s Digitalisation drive. The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana’s recent research on the number of robbery attacks on Agents, has revealed much troubling statistics.

In a survey of 22 respondents who were attacked Between the period of October to November 12th,2021, the cumulative sum lost through robbery only, amounted to Gh334,582.00. The report has revealed that most of the capital these victims are operating with are facilities obtained from banks,families and friends on high rates. The extreme is death of robbed victims

and by extension, lost of source of livelihood to people who depend on these manial businesses. The motivation of the Research is to appreciate the extent of threat, the activities of these robbers have on the ecosystem and propose to relevant stakeholders how this challenge could be mitigated. Head of Researches and IT, Mr.Tretsu Zion Blessing has said.Most of these robberies are reported to the Police but the respondents say the results are not any different

and would want to be assisted to get back to business but a different venture.The Assocation says it has been one of the hardest times having members attacked and they looked helpless with no support afterwards.In the interim, little technical support is available to assist Agents in such unfortunate circumstances.He went on to encourage all Agents to quickly report incident of robbery through the Assocation’s complaints platform “https://mmaag.org/contact/” immediately after reporting it to the police service.

Additionally, all Agents must be very careful going to the Christmas. The Union is calling on the Security agencies to beef up their operations going into the festive season.
